Jesus Christ, A Pacifist?!

Posted by Tommy on Jan 21, 2010 in My Thoughts

So, it’s two in the morning, I don’t have any classes tomorrow until my 9:30 am Humanities Lecture, and besides, what’s the use of coffee if you’re not tired when you wake up? That in itself is enough to make me want to blog, but when you add on top of it the fact that I had an epiphany today (well, yesterday), it makes for an irresistible urge to post. So, as D.J. MacHale so eloquently put it in his Pendragon Series, “Hobey-ho, let’s go!”

Hero Worship in Modern Day America

Posted by Tommy on Jan 6, 2010 in My Thoughts

In my wonderings among the internets, and especially among the current favorite social network of young people and old fogeys (that’s facebook, for all of you dead people reading this), I have happened upon several topics of interest for this blogging experiment of mine. Today’s inspiration came from two groups on facebook: Soldiers Are Not Heroes and Petition to Remove the Group “Soldiers are Not Heroes” INVITE ENTIRE FRIENDS.

Gideon, the CHILD of God

Posted by Tommy on Sep 7, 2009 in Sermons

I preached this sermon for my home church in June. It was only my second time preaching and it was wayyyy better than the first time. The day before giving the sermon I ended up rewriting the entire thing, and it presented to you in its final format. Enjoy!

Salvation is Here

Just yesterday I was in Peoria for counselor training at a camp I’ll be volunteering at during the last week of July. I learned a lot of really neat stuff, some of it really heavy. Last night as I was polishing up my sermon a little bit more, I felt the spirit moving me to try and get across a few of the things I learned yesterday, but to do that, we need to go back to Genesis and the fall of humanity.

High School Memoirs – Part 4

Posted by Tommy on Sep 7, 2009 in High School Memoirs

So, apparently sitting at home bored silly does not increase my chances of writing a new post. To those of you who were sitting in front of your computers hitting refresh this entire time, I’m sorry to have kept you waiting, and perhaps you should get a life. Now, back to our irregularly scheduled programing..

Mark Jenkins

Age: 18
When we met: Middle School
How we met: Church Youth Group
Memorable moment(s): I’m not a Demon, I’m just retarded!! (Right. Everyone who isn’t Mark just ignore this and pretend that I never wrote it. If you ask about it, I will deny its existence.)

#$@%! Foul Language – Is it ever appropriate?

Posted by Tommy on Sep 3, 2009 in My Thoughts

Bad Words

This was a difficult post for me personally, and not because I have to struggle constantly to control my tongue. Rather, this post was hard to write because for the past semester or so I have been defending a view of foul language that was wrong and which had no basis in scripture, and in defending that view, I’m afraid that I may have inadvertently caused others to struggle even more in their own walks. This troubles me deeply, and so it was with a heavy heart that I set out to write this particular post.

Alcohol

Posted by Tommy on Jun 23, 2009 in My Thoughts

alcohol

Well, it’s been two weeks since my wonderful idea, and it’s about time I get this thing moving. I’ve really been thinking a lot about this particular topic lately; it seems to be an issue that many people my age are dealing with.

A Most Brilliant Idea

Posted by Tommy on Jun 7, 2009 in My Thoughts

I was sitting in church today and had what I thought was a brilliant idea. After waking up from my after-lunch nap and watching several episodes of “Sonny with a chance” on the still glorious Disney channel, I read an excellent blog by Andrew Ford, which you may all read at your leisure here. Upon reading the blog, I remembered my most brilliant idea, and now I have come here to tell the world (or at least the few people who occasionally wander onto my blog).

I Believe in Defining Love

Posted by Tommy on May 10, 2009 in My Thoughts

Love: A deep, tender, ineffable feeling of affection and solicitude toward a person, such as that arising from kinship, recognition of attractive qualities, or a sense of underlying oneness.
-The American Heritage Dictionary

If there is one thing I have learned in the nineteen short years of my life, it is a definition of love. This definition cannot be limited by words or crammed into a convenient dictionary passage. Nor can love be defined as the body’s reaction to certain stimulus or people in our lives. No, this definition of love is one that supersedes the pithy power of words. I believe in defining love.
